Spin⁡(1,R)\operatorname{Spin}(1,\mathbb R) is the in the even of R1\mathbb R^{1} with Q(v)=∑jvj2Q(v)=\sum_jv_j^2 and convention v2=−Q(v)1v^2=-Q(v)1. It is generated by products of an even number of vectors satisfying Q(v)=1Q(v)=1.

Dimensions and structure

This group has real dimension 00. Conjugation on the generating gives a two-to-one homomorphism to SO(1,R)\mathrm{SO}(1,\mathbb R) with kernel {±1}\{\pm1\}. In dimension one this is the discrete group {±1}\{\pm1\}, and SO(1) is trivial. It is not connected.

Clifford conjugation gives a two-sheeted covering with kernel {±1}. See .

In the one-dimensional Clifford algebra, even products of are exactly {±1}; identify each scalar with the same one-by-one orthogonal matrix. See .

One-dimensional calculation

Let ee be the basis vector with e2=−1e^2=-1. The only vectors satisfying Q(v)=1Q(v)=1 are ee and −e-e, and their even products are exactly 1,−11,-1. They commute with ee, so both act trivially on the one-dimensional vector space.
