For θ∈R\theta\in\mathbb R, the noncommutative two-torus AθA_\theta is the generated by unitaries u,vu,v subject to

vu=e2πiθuv.vu=e^{2\pi i\theta}uv.

For irrational θ\theta, it is also called the irrational rotation algebra.

Construction from a circle rotation

For Tθ(x)=x+θT_\theta(x)=x+\theta, let α(f)=f∘Tθ−1\alpha(f)=f\circ T_\theta^{-1} on C(T)C(\mathbb T), and let v(x)=e2πixv(x)=e^{2\pi ix}. The covariance relation uvu∗=α(v)=e−2πiθvuvu^*=\alpha(v)=e^{-2\pi i\theta}v gives the defining commutation rule. Thus

Aθ≅C(T)⋊αZ.A_\theta\cong C(\mathbb T)\rtimes_\alpha\mathbb Z.

The group Z\mathbb Z is amenable, so full and reduced crossed products agree.

Completions and the commutative value

For θ=0\theta=0, the generators commute and A0≅C(T2)A_0\cong C(\mathbb T^2). The von Neumann algebra L∞(T)⋊ZL^\infty(\mathbb T)\rtimes\mathbb Z is a different completion, using the Haar tracial representation. For irrational θ\theta, essential freeness and ergodicity make it a type II1\mathrm{II}_1 factor; it is the .
