For integers n≥3n\geq3 and prime powers qq, excluding (n,q)=(3,2)(n,q)=(3,2), PSU⁡n(q)\operatorname{PSU}_{n}(q) is the defined by

PSU⁡n(q)=SU⁡n(q)/{λI:λq+1=1, λn=1},SU⁡n(q)={A∈Mn(Fq2):(A(q))TA=I, det⁡A=1}.\operatorname{PSU}_{n}(q)=\operatorname{SU}_{n}(q)/\{\lambda I:\lambda^{q+1}=1,\ \lambda^{n}=1\}, \quad \operatorname{SU}_{n}(q)=\{A\in M_{n}(\mathbb F_{q^2}): (A^{(q)})^{\mathsf T}A=I,\ \det A=1\}.

Here A(q)A^{(q)} is entrywise qq-th power. The has q2q^2 elements; its involution has of size qq. The scalar λ\lambda belongs to Fq2×\mathbb F_{q^2}^\times; multiplication is multiplication of scalar cosets.

Order and simplicity

Its order is

∣PSU⁡n(q)∣=qn(n−1)/2∏i=2n(qi−(−1)i)gcd⁡(n,q+1).|\operatorname{PSU}_{n}(q)|=\frac{q^{n(n-1)/2}\prod_{i=2}^{n}(q^i-(-1)^i)}{\gcd(n,q+1)}.

It is simple for every admitted parameter: n ≥ 3 and (n,q) ≠ (3,2).

Parameter convention

The parameter qq is the size of the fixed field, while matrices have entries in Fq2\mathbb F_{q^2}. The Hermitian form is h(v,w)=∑iviqwih(v,w)=\sum_i v_i^q w_i. All nondegenerate Hermitian forms of this dimension over the finite field give isomorphic groups. Type 2An−1{}^2A_{n-1} has absolute rank n−1n-1; it is not a unitary group over the real or complex numbers.
