PSU⁡3(2)\operatorname{PSU}_{3}(2) is the following , with n=3n=3 and q=2q=2:

PSU⁡3(2)=SU⁡3(2)/{λI:λ2+1=1, λ3=1},SU⁡3(2)={A∈M3(F22):(A(2))TA=I, det⁡A=1}.\operatorname{PSU}_{3}(2)=\operatorname{SU}_{3}(2)/\{\lambda I:\lambda^{2+1}=1,\ \lambda^{3}=1\}, \quad \operatorname{SU}_{3}(2)=\{A\in M_{3}(\mathbb F_{2^2}): (A^{(2)})^{\mathsf T}A=I,\ \det A=1\}.

Here A(2)A^{(2)} is entrywise 22-th power. The has 222^2 elements; its involution has of size 22. The scalar λ\lambda belongs to F22×\mathbb F_{2^2}^\times; multiplication is multiplication of scalar cosets.

Order and simplicity

Its order is

∣PSU⁡3(2)∣=72.|\operatorname{PSU}_{3}(2)|=72.

It is not simple: PSU(3,2) is a of order 72. The exact order is 72.

Parameter convention

The parameter qq is the size of the fixed field, while matrices have entries in Fq2\mathbb F_{q^2}. The Hermitian form is h(v,w)=∑iviqwih(v,w)=\sum_i v_i^q w_i. All nondegenerate Hermitian forms of this dimension over the finite field give isomorphic groups. Type 2An−1{}^2A_{n-1} has absolute rank n−1n-1; it is not a unitary group over the real or complex numbers.
