The reduced trace of xx in a BB over a field FF of characteristic different from two is

trd⁡(x)=x+xˉ∈F,\operatorname{trd}(x)=x+\bar x\in F,

where xˉ\bar x is . In a presentation B=(a,b)FB=(a,b)_F, one has

trd⁡(x0+x1i+x2j+x3ij)=2x0.\operatorname{trd}(x_0+x_1i+x_2j+x_3ij)=2x_0.
Trace identities

The map is FF-linear and satisfies trd⁡(xy)=trd⁡(yx)\operatorname{trd}(xy)=\operatorname{trd}(yx). Together with the , it gives the identity

x2−trd⁡(x)x+nrd⁡(x)=0.x^2-\operatorname{trd}(x)x+\operatorname{nrd}(x)=0.

This follows by expanding and using xxˉ=xˉxx\bar x=\bar xx.

Two different traces

In M2(F)M_2(F), reduced trace is ordinary matrix trace. On the four-dimensional vector space BB, however, the linear operator Lx:y↦xyL_x:y\mapsto xy has ordinary trace 2trd⁡(x)2\operatorname{trd}(x). Reduced trace should not be confused with the trace of that regular representation.

The kernel is the space of .
