A compact abelian rotation is the

Ra:K→K,Ra(x)=x+a,R_a:K\to K,\qquad R_a(x)=x+a,

where KK is a compact metrizable abelian group with normalized and a∈Ka\in K.

Characters and ergodicity

For a character χ\chi, forward pullback gives URaχ=χ(a)χU_{R_a}\chi=\chi(a)\chi. Since characters form a , the rotation is ergodic exactly when χ(a)≠1\chi(a)\ne1 for every nontrivial character. Equivalently, the cyclic subgroup generated by aa is dense in KK.

Group actions by translations

More generally, translations by elements of a subgroup H⊆KH\subseteq K act ergodically exactly when H‾=K\overline H=K, or equivalently when no nontrivial character is one on every element of HH. This is a joint condition on the translating subgroup.
