Proposition. Let XX be a vector space, and let {Yα}α∈I\{Y_\alpha\}_{\alpha\in I} be a family of of XX. Then

Y:=⋂α∈IYαY:=\bigcap_{\alpha\in I} Y_\alpha

is also a linear subspace of XX.

Remarks

Proof sketch. Each YαY_\alpha contains 00, so 0∈Y0\in Y. If x,y∈Yx,y\in Y, then x,y∈Yαx,y\in Y_\alpha for every α\alpha, hence x+y∈Yαx+y\in Y_\alpha for every α\alpha, so x+y∈Yx+y\in Y. Similarly, if λ∈K\lambda\in K and x∈Yx\in Y, then λx∈Yα\lambda x\in Y_\alpha for all α\alpha, so λx∈Y\lambda x\in Y.

This fact underlies the definition of the as an intersection of all subspaces containing a set.
