For nonnegative integers p,qp,q with p+q≥1p+q\geq1, the indefinite special unitary real su(p,q)\mathfrak{su}(p,q) is defined by

su(p,q)={X∈Mp+q(C):X∗η+ηX=0, tr⁡X=0},η=diag⁡(Ip,−Iq).\mathfrak{su}(p,q)=\{X\in M_{p+q}(\mathbb C):X^*\eta+\eta X=0,\ \operatorname{tr}X=0\},\qquad \eta=\operatorname{diag}(I_{p},-I_{q}).

Its bracket is [X,Y]=XY−YX[X,Y]=XY-YX. The star is conjugate transpose.

Signature, dimension and scalars

The signature convention is pp positive and qq negative directions. Negating the entire form leaves the matrix unchanged, and exchanging the two coordinate blocks identifies signatures (p,q)(p,q) and (q,p)(q,p). The matrix ηX\eta X is skew-Hermitian over C\mathbb C, giving (p+q)2(p+q)^2 real parameters. Its purely imaginary trace must also vanish, imposing one real equation.

The scalar field of this Lie algebra is R\mathbb R. Its complex matrix entries do not make its defining bracket space closed under complex scalar multiplication.
