The real exceptional e8(−24)\mathfrak{e}_{8(-24)} is the noncompact real form of characterized, up to real , by a maximal compact subalgebra isomorphic to e7compact⊕su(2)\mathfrak e_7^{\mathrm{compact}}\oplus\mathfrak{su}(2). Its real dimension is 248.

Signature convention and magic square

The signature convention is positive minus negative Killing-form directions. In a Cartan decomposition g=k⊕p\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k\oplus\mathfrak p it equals dim⁡p−dim⁡k=248−2⋅136=−24\dim\mathfrak p-\dim\mathfrak k=248-2\cdot136=-24. This labels a real form, not its complex dimension. The complexification is the simple complex type E8E_8 algebra.

It occurs among the singly split composition-algebra magic-square outputs. Some sources use the opposite sign for this signature; specifying the maximal compact subalgebra removes that ambiguity.
