The real exceptional e6(−26)\mathfrak{e}_{6(-26)} is the noncompact real form of characterized, up to real , by a maximal compact subalgebra isomorphic to f4compact\mathfrak f_4^{\mathrm{compact}}. Its real dimension is 78.

Signature convention and magic square

The signature convention is positive minus negative Killing-form directions. In a Cartan decomposition g=k⊕p\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k\oplus\mathfrak p it equals dim⁡p−dim⁡k=78−2⋅52=−26\dim\mathfrak p-\dim\mathfrak k=78-2\cdot52=-26. This labels a real form, not its complex dimension. The complexification is the simple complex type E6E_6 algebra.

It occurs among the singly split composition-algebra magic-square outputs. Some sources use the opposite sign for this signature; specifying the maximal compact subalgebra removes that ambiguity.
