For integers n≥3n\geq3 and prime powers q≥2q\geq 2, P⁡Ω2n+1(q)\operatorname{P}\Omega_{2n+1}(q) is the of Q(x,y,z)=∑i=1nxiyi+z2Q(x,y,z)=\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_i y_i+z^2 on Fq2n+1\mathbb F_q^{2n+1}:

Ω=O⁡(Q)′,P⁡Ω2n+1(q)=Ω/(Ω∩{λI:λ∈Fq×}).\Omega=\operatorname O(Q)',\qquad \operatorname{P}\Omega_{2n+1}(q)=\Omega/(\Omega\cap\{\lambda I:\lambda\in\mathbb F_q^\times\}).

Here O⁡(Q)\operatorname O(Q) is the group of invertible preserving QQ, and its prime denotes the . Multiplication is multiplication of scalar cosets. The displayed , not merely its polar form, is part of the definition.

Order and simplicity

Its order is

∣P⁡Ω2n+1(q)∣=qn2∏i=1n(q2i−1)gcd⁡(2,q−1).|\operatorname{P}\Omega_{2n+1}(q)|=\frac{q^{n^2}\prod_{i=1}^{n}(q^{2i}-1)}{\gcd(2,q-1)}.

It is a nonabelian for every admitted parameter.

Rank and form convention

The ambient quadratic-space dimension is 2n+12n+1, and the absolute rank is nn. This is type BnB_{n}. The Witt index is nn. For even qq, the polar form has a one-dimensional radical and passage to its quotient gives P⁡Ω2n+1(q)≅PSp⁡2n(q)\operatorname{P}\Omega_{2n+1}(q)\cong\operatorname{PSp}_{2n}(q) in this stated range. For odd qq and n≥3n\geq3, the two groups have equal orders but are not isomorphic.
