Definition
Finite general linear group GL_2(q)
Invertible matrices over F_q.
Let , with prime and an integer, and choose the finite field . The general linear group is the group of invertible matrices over , with matrix multiplication.
Order
The group order is . For an invertible matrix, choose ordered linearly independent columns: after choices, precisely vectors are forbidden for the next column.
Simplicity conditions
For , the determinant map onto has a proper nontrivial kernel, the special linear group. For , this group is isomorphic to , whose alternating subgroup is proper nontrivial normal. Thus is never simple.
Field and category convention
The parameter must be a prime power. This is a finite abstract group; the field and its vector space supply a construction, rather than a vector-space structure on the matrix group itself.
