Definition
Dihedral group D_6
Cyclic rotations extended by an involution acting by inversion.
the dihedral group is the semidirect product in which the nontrivial element of acts by inversion. Equivalently, its elements are pairs , with
The coordinates are reduced modulo and , respectively; the subscript records the group order.
Order and simplicity
The group has elements. The first factor is a proper nontrivial normal subgroup, so this group is not simple.
Notation and small cases
This catalogue uses for a group of order ; another common convention calls the same group . The abstract definition admits : it gives and the Klein four-group, respectively. For , it is the symmetry group of a regular -gon.
