Definition
Dihedral group D_2n
Cyclic rotations extended by an involution acting by inversion.
For an integer , the dihedral group is the semidirect product in which the nontrivial element of acts by inversion. Equivalently, its elements are pairs , with
The coordinates are reduced modulo and , respectively; the subscript records the group order.
Order and simplicity
The group has elements. The rotation subgroup is normal of index two. It is proper nontrivial when , while gives . Thus simplicity occurs exactly for .
Notation and small cases
This catalogue uses for a group of order ; another common convention calls the same group . The abstract definition admits : it gives and the Klein four-group, respectively. For , it is the symmetry group of a regular -gon.
