The 33-adic integer ring is the closed unit ball

Z3={x∈Q3:∣x∣3≤1}\mathbb Z_3=\{x\in\mathbb Q_3:|x|_3\le1\}

in , with inherited addition, multiplication and 33-adic topology. Equivalently it is the inverse limit lim←⁡mZ/3mZ\varprojlim_m\mathbb Z/3^m\mathbb Z under reduction maps.

Digits and residue

Every element has a unique convergent expansion ∑j≥0aj3j\sum_{j\ge0}a_j3^j, with digits aj∈{0,…,3−1}a_j\in\{0,\ldots,3-1\}. The constant digit is reduction modulo the 3Z33\mathbb Z_3; the is .

Ring rather than field

The unit group consists of elements with nonzero constant digit. The ring is compact, complete and infinite, and 33 is not a unit. In particular it is neither the finite ring Z/3Z\mathbb Z/3\mathbb Z nor a rational vector space.
