For a prime pp, Qp(2),ur\mathbb Q_p^{(2),\mathrm{ur}} denotes an of Qp\mathbb Q_p of degree 22, equipped with the extended pp-adic topology. Its ramification index is one and its is Fp2\mathbb F_{p^2}.

Choice and notation

Within a chosen of Qp\mathbb Q_p, there is a unique such subextension of each positive degree. The displayed notation is local catalogue notation; the algebraic closure and embedding are parameters when needed. Its valuation ring has uniformizer pp.

Degree-one boundary

Degree one recovers . Higher-degree examples give characteristic-zero with the same residue-field sizes as the equal-characteristic Laurent-series examples; these fields are not isomorphic because their characteristics differ.
