For an integer n≥1n\ge1, the rational matrix algebra Mn(Q)M_n(\mathbb Q) is the of n×nn\times n matrices with entries, with entrywise addition and scalar multiplication, and the associative product

(AB)ij=∑r=1nAirBrj.(AB)_{ij}=\sum_{r=1}^{n} A_{ir}B_{rj}.

Its multiplicative unit is the identity matrix InI_n.

Basis and dimensions

The matrix units EijE_{ij} form a rational basis of size n2n^2, with EijErs=δjrEisE_{ij}E_{rs}=\delta_{jr}E_{is}. Thus its rational dimension is n2n^2. The center consists of scalar matrices.

Endomorphism interpretation

After choosing a basis of Qn\mathbb Q^n, this algebra identifies with End⁡Q(Qn)\operatorname{End}_{\mathbb Q}(\mathbb Q^n), with matrix product corresponding to composition. Its units form GLn(Q)\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb Q). These are units of this algebra; an automorphism of the matrix algebra is a different sort of map.

Low-dimensional boundary

For size one, scalar matrices give M1(Q)≅QM_1(\mathbb Q)\cong\mathbb Q as unital rational algebras. For every size at least two, E11E_{11} and E22E_{22} are nonzero with zero product, so the matrix algebra is not a division algebra.
