For a prime pp and an integer k≥1k\ge1, Fpk\mathbb F_{p^k} denotes a with pkp^k elements. It can be realized as the roots of xpk−xx^{p^k}-x in a chosen of Fp\mathbb F_p, or as Fp[x]/(f)\mathbb F_p[x]/(f) for a chosen monic ff of degree kk.

Maps and field choices

The field is unique up to isomorphism, not up to a unique isomorphism. Its Fp\mathbb F_p-automorphism group is cyclic of order kk, generated by Frobenius a↦apa\mapsto a^p. A polynomial presentation specifies coordinates; embeddings into another finite field are extra relationship data.

Degree and cardinality

The exponent kk is the vector-space dimension over Fp\mathbb F_p, whereas pkp^k is the number of elements. This notation must not be confused with the residue ring Z/pkZ\mathbb Z/p^k\mathbb Z, which has when the exponent exceeds one.
