For a prime pp, Fp3\mathbb F_{p^3} denotes a with p3p^3 elements. It can be realized as the roots of xp3−xx^{p^3}-x in a chosen of Fp\mathbb F_p, or as Fp[x]/(f)\mathbb F_p[x]/(f) for a chosen monic ff of degree 33.

Maps and field choices

The field is unique up to isomorphism, not up to a unique isomorphism. Its Fp\mathbb F_p-automorphism group is cyclic of order 33, generated by Frobenius a↦apa\mapsto a^p. A polynomial presentation specifies coordinates; embeddings into another finite field are extra relationship data.

Degree and cardinality

The exponent 33 is the vector-space dimension over Fp\mathbb F_p, whereas p3p^3 is the number of elements. This notation must not be confused with the residue ring Z/p3Z\mathbb Z/p^3\mathbb Z, which has when the exponent exceeds one.
