Definition
Finite field F_(p^2)
Finite field F_(p^2) with its specified scalar field, operations, and categorical structure.
For a prime , denotes a field with elements. It can be realized as the roots of in a chosen algebraic closure of , or as for a chosen monic irreducible polynomial of degree .
Maps and field choices
The field is unique up to isomorphism, not up to a unique isomorphism. Its -automorphism group is cyclic of order , generated by Frobenius . A polynomial presentation specifies coordinates; embeddings into another finite field are extra relationship data.
Degree and cardinality
The exponent is the vector-space dimension over , whereas is the number of elements. This notation must not be confused with the residue ring , which has zero divisors when the exponent exceeds one.
