The field F4\mathbb F_4 is the presented by

F4=F2[x]/(x2+x+1).\mathbb F_4=\mathbb F_2[x]/(x^2+x+1).

Writing α\alpha for the residue class of xx, every element has a unique representative of degree less than 22, and α2=α+1\alpha^2=\alpha+1.

Why this is a field

The polynomial x2+x+1x^2+x+1 has no root in F2\mathbb F_2. Since its degree is two, it is irreducible; the quotient is therefore a field. Counting coefficients gives exactly 4 elements.

Field maps versus linear maps

The group has order 22, generated by a↦a2a\mapsto a^2. The additive space has dimension 22 over F2\mathbb F_2, so its linear automorphism group is GL2(F2)\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb F_2). A general invertible linear map need not preserve products or the unit.

Recorded linear maps

Its over F2\mathbb F_2 is M2(F2)M_2(\mathbb F_2), with 16 maps. Its invertible linear maps form GL2(F2)\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb F_2), with 6 elements. The catalogue keeps this scalar category separate from field morphisms, for which only the 2 Frobenius powers occur.
