The formal power-series ring F3[ ⁣[t] ⁣]\mathbb F_3[\![t]\!] consists of all series ∑j≥0ajtj\sum_{j\ge0}a_jt^j over the , with coefficientwise addition and convolution multiplication. It carries the tt-adic topology, whose neighborhoods of zero are the ideals tmF3[ ⁣[t] ⁣]t^m\mathbb F_3[\![t]\!].

Units, residue and completion

A series is invertible exactly when its constant coefficient is nonzero. This compact complete ring has (t)(t) and F3\mathbb F_3. It is the inverse limit of F3[t]/(tm)\mathbb F_3[t]/(t^m); inversion of tt gives .

Polynomial comparison

The is dense here, but it contains only finite sums. Infinite positive tails belong to the power-series ring and generally are not rational functions.
