Definition
Laurent-series field F_2((t))
Laurent-series field F_2((t)) with its specified scalar field, operations, and categorical structure.
The formal Laurent-series field consists of series , with and , over the finite field . Addition is coefficientwise and multiplication is convolution. Its topology is defined by , with .
Local structure
The ring of integers is , the maximal ideal is generated by , and reduction takes the constant coefficient. With , this is a complete locally compact nondiscrete field of characteristic 2.
Formal rather than analytic
Only finitely many negative exponents are allowed. These are formal series, with convergence governed by powers of , not functions evaluated at a complex number. Every nonzero series is a power of times a unit, which supplies its inverse.
