A specified associative KK-algebra AA is an associative unital with a fixed unital scalar map K→Z(A)K\to Z(A), where Z(A)Z(A) is its center. Given a specified , composing scalar maps also makes AA an FF-algebra.

Four types of maps

A KK-module endomorphism is KK-linear; an FF-module endomorphism need only be FF-linear. A corresponding algebra endomorphism also preserves multiplication, with preservation of 1A1_A controlled separately by the category. The algebra need not be commutative.

Dimensions and comparison

When [K:F]=d[K:F]=d and dim⁡KA=m\dim_K A=m are finite, dim⁡FA=dm\dim_F A=dm. Choosing bases identifies the two linear endomorphism rings with Mm(K)M_m(K) and Mdm(F)M_{dm}(F). Algebra endomorphisms are constrained by the multiplication table; dimension alone does not determine them. In infinite dimension the displayed dimension product is interpreted as cardinal multiplication.
