Local Hilbert symbol
The sign recording whether a quaternion algebra over a local field splits.
Let be a local field of characteristic different from two, and let . The Hilbert symbol is if the quaternion algebra generated by , , is split, and if it is a division algebra.
This page uses the sign-valued convention. The similar notation for the quaternion algebra itself denotes an algebra, not a sign.
Square classes
Multiplying either parameter by a nonzero square does not change the symbol. It therefore descends to in each argument. The resulting pairing is symmetric and multiplicative in each variable.
Over , the value is exactly when both parameters are negative. Over , it is always .
The prime two matters
For odd integers ,
Thus , while at every odd prime .
The sign is also distinct from the additive local Brauer invariant, whose quaternion values are and modulo .
