The tensor product of algebras A⊗RBA\otimes_R B of two RR-algebras A,BA,B over a RR is the of the underlying RR-modules, equipped with the unique RR-algebra structure for which

(a⊗b)⋅(a′⊗b′)=(aa′)⊗(bb′)(a\otimes b)\cdot (a'\otimes b') = (aa')\otimes (bb')

and whose structure map R→A⊗RBR\to A\otimes_R B is r↦(r⋅1A)⊗1B=1A⊗(r⋅1B)r\mapsto (r\cdot 1_A)\otimes 1_B = 1_A\otimes (r\cdot 1_B). The multiplication is induced from the bilinear multiplication maps in AA and BB via the universal property of ⊗R\otimes_R.

This construction is the algebraic version of “base change” and interacts well with presentations, quotients, and localization in commutative algebra.

Examples
  • Over a field kk, one has k[x]⊗kk[y]≅k[x,y]k[x]\otimes_k k[y]\cong k[x,y] as kk-algebras, where k[x]k[x] is a .
  • If SS is an RR-algebra and I⊆RI\subseteq R is an , then S⊗R(R/I)≅S/ISS\otimes_R (R/I)\cong S/IS as RR-algebras.
